India is one of the major players in the agriculture sector worldwide and is the primary livelihood source for over 58% of India’s population. India has the second-largest agricultural land in the world and feeds India’s population of 1.4 billion. Historically, India has been the exporter of agricultural produce, and even today, for a few commodities like rice, sugar and spices remains one of the top exporters. However, the country’s agriculture sector has immense untapped potential. There is a need to focus on building robust value chains for agricultural commodities with the help of technology. A critical component of successful interventions up and down the value chains would be inclusive of farmers, communities, governments, financiers, and businesses. Cross-sectoral collaboration to develop need-based and regionally differentiated technology is urgently needed to deliver customised solutions to the farming sector of India.
